Gale PowerSearch

This HUGE database is actually cross-searching the very large databases Academic Onefile and General Onefile, as well as other Gale databases, such as Health & Wellness Resource Center, so it is a great place to look when you have a challenging topic to research.

1. Gale PowerSearch Default

By default, in Gale PowerSearch, you are taken to a keyword search.  Because this database is huge, you may be overwhelmed with results (see steps 2 & 3 below for suggestions to find better results).

2. Subject Guide Search

If the default keyword search gives you too many results, consider trying the Subject Guide Search that allows you to focus on a specific topic.

3. No Results Found in Subject Guide - Don't Panic!

In the Subject Guide Search, you won't always find your exact topic.  Don't panic, simply use the search box that shows up at the top of the screen if your topic isn't found, or click on Advanced Search

4. Subject Subdivisions

If your subject is found, you'll have the option to view the Subdivisions of your topic.  Subdivisions are very handy and allow you to jump to the subtopic of greatest interest.

  • Note: If you've looked at a subdivision of interest, and want to return to your original topic, simply click on the Gale PowerSearch icon, and from there click on the Subject Guide Search link and repeat your search.

5. Results Set

Once in your results set, be sure to notice what Content Type you're viewing - meaning Academic Journals, Magazines, Books, Videos, etc.  You can always select a different content type if you'd like.

***Remember, sometimes you'll need to link out to full text by clicking on the Find It link.  Click here for a reminder on using the Find It link, or see a video tutorial on using the Find It link.

6. PowerSearch Tools

If you click on a title to go into the full record, you'll see the Tools on the right side of the screen.  One option is Citation Tools that can assist you with creating a properly formatted citation; however, the citations in this database are usually incorrect and require slight modificationsPlease check the citation against an APA style guide, such as the APA Guide found here.
