Searchable fields include Full-Text (entire content of article), Author, Item Title, Abstract (summary of article; there are only a limited number of abstracts in JSTOR), and Caption (of illustration).

Limits include Item Type (for most cases, I recommend setting this limit to Articles), Date Range (of when article was published), Article Language, and Discipline(s) and/or Journal(s).

As a sample search, try “Emancipation Proclamation” as an Item Title search setting the Item Type limit to Articles. Use quotation marks so Emancipation Proclamation will be searched as a phrase:
