Professional Associations

Your professional associations will vary depending upon your chosen career path. Most people belong to at least two associations: the national association for their vocation and the regional or state chapter for that same profession.

Many professional organizations have student chapters with reduced membership rates and offer reasonable rates for students to attend conferences and meetings. Joining while you're a student to get a taste of the association and become involved gets you great networking opportunities and looks great on your resume when you're ready to start your job search.

Professional associations are also important because they provide a few opportunities and services that are specific to your profession that you will never find on any generic job site:

Conferences
Often have open job fairs. Give you a chance to make connections, rub shoulders, and meet potential employers.

JobLists
Job listings specifically in your field, updated regularly.

ListServs
